In partnership with the Florida History and Genealogy Library, the Kotler Art Gallery celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the historic Burgert Brothers Photographic Studio with an exhibit featuring the lives, landmarks, and events captured by the studio in its first year of operation. 

Reception: Saturday, September 16th at 2:00 p.m.

Burgert Brothers Walking Tour of Ybor City

Emanuel Leto, Director of Marketing at the Tampa Bay History Center, will provide a 90 minute guided tour of Ybor City. Take a walk down historic Seventh Avenue and visit the site of the Tampa Box Company, the Centro Espanol Club, the Italian Club, the Ritz Theatre, just to name a few. We’ll meet at Jose Marti Park at 6:00 pm and begin our eight-stop journey shortly thereafter. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, keeping our unpredictable Florida weather in mind.

100th Anniversary – Founding of the Burgert Brothers Studio

Join us for the culmination of our month-long series of events celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the opening of Alfred and Jean Burgert’s photographic studio. Five speakers will address different aspects of the Burgert Brothers Photographic Collection and its uses, with the afternoon concluding with a caking cutting. University of South Florida professor and coauthor of the book, Pioneer Commercial Photography : The Burgert Brothers, Tampa, Florida, Robert Snyder will open with an exploration of the Burgert family and the development of brothers’ work into a significant community resource. Gary Mormino, University of South Florida Professor Emeritus and a prolific author, will discuss the use of the photographs within newspapers and other publications. Bryan Weinstein, creator of the Tampa Changing website, will compare and contrast current photographs with Burgert Brothers images of structures. Delphin Acosta, architectural historian and author, will examine the value of the collection from a residential design perspective.

Refreshments will be provided.
